Printer not showing up on the network? Start here

When a wireless printer disappears from the list, the cause is usually one of four things.

Check that the printer and the computer are on the same network. Guest networks usually keep devices apart on purpose, and some routers use different network names for their 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Many printers only support 2.4 GHz, so the computer may be on a different network without you noticing.

Most printers can print a network status or configuration page from their own menu. It shows whether the printer is connected, which network it joined and which IP address it has. This one page answers most questions.

A printer that worked yesterday and disappeared today may have received a new IP address from the router. Most routers let you reserve a fixed address for a device. Reserving one for the printer stops the problem from coming back.

Restart in order: printer first, then the computer. If the printer still does not appear, try adding it by its IP address from the status page instead of waiting for it to show up in the list.

Finally, install the current driver or app from the printer manufacturer's own website. Old drivers are a common cause of a printer that is visible but will not print.
