What to tell your internet provider when the connection keeps dropping
Providers solve problems faster when you give them facts they can check. Collect these before you call.
Write down when the problem started and how often it happens. A pattern, such as every evening or every few minutes, helps the provider decide whether the line, the area or the equipment is at fault.
Note whether every device is affected and whether a device connected by cable also loses the connection. If a cabled device drops too, the problem is not your Wi-Fi, and the provider cannot blame it.
Look at the modem lights during a drop and write down which ones change. Photograph them if that is easier. Support teams often ask about specific lights.
Run a few speed tests at different times of day and keep the results with their times. A record over several days is far more convincing than a single test.
List what you have already tried, such as restarting the modem and router or trying a different cable. This saves you from repeating the same basic steps on the phone.
When you call, ask for a line test, and ask for a reference number before you hang up. If the problem returns, the reference number lets you continue instead of starting again.
